Sony Xperia 5 V: A Flagship Camera and Fresh Design Unveiled in Latest Launch
Sony Xperia 5 V: Compact Flagship Powerhouse Unveiled
True to its promise, Sony has introduced its latest compact flagship, the Sony Xperia 5 V. Unlike its predecessors that often faced delays in availability, this remarkable smartphone is set to hit the market later this month, delivering a potent combination of performance and design.
Design and Display
The Xperia 5 V embraces the concept of a compact phone, featuring a 6.1-inch 1080p OLED panel with an impressive 120Hz refresh rate. It retains Sony’s iconic 21:9 narrow aspect ratio, ensuring a sleek and cinematic viewing experience. While it’s categorized as “compact,” it’s worth noting that it’s still slightly larger than some other small-sized phones like the Asus Zenfone or the late iPhone Mini.
Sony has kept the convention of having bezels at the top and bottom, and it continues to feature a pair of front-firing speakers. Although the phone has gained 11 grams and a slightly increased thickness, it remains marginally shorter than its predecessor. Transitioning from the Xperia 1 V, the Xperia 5 V offers a pleasantly compact feel that many users appreciate.
Internals and Storage
Under the hood, Sony equips the Xperia 5 V with Qualcomm’s most powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, complemented by 8 GB of RAM and a generous 128 GB of storage. And if you find yourself needing more storage space, rest assured, it’s expandable through a microSD card.
The device will come running Android 13 out of the box, ensuring you have access to the latest features and updates.
Cameras
Sony takes a different approach with the Xperia 5 V, opting for a dual-camera setup instead of the previous triple-camera arrangement. However, this new configuration features a significantly more capable sensor. The Xperia 5 V shares the same impressive 1/1.35-inch 52MP main sensor as the top-end Xperia 1 V. This enhanced sensor size, combined with bright optics, translates to improved light capture, particularly when using the 2x zoom setting (equivalent to a 48mm focal length). This results in better light-gathering capabilities compared to the telephoto camera on the Xperia 5 IV.
The second camera in the setup is a 12MP 1/2.5-inch ultrawide lens with a focal length of 16mm, resembling the camera used in both the Xperia 1 V and the previous year’s Xperia 5 IV. This camera boasts dual-pixel autofocus technology, ensuring you capture stunning wide-angle shots with ease.
On the front, a capable 12MP 1/2.9-inch camera continues to handle selfies for another year, promising crisp and vibrant self-portraits.
Battery and Pricing
The Xperia 5 V retains its predecessor’s battery capacity at 5,000 mAh. However, with the upgraded Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, improved battery life is expected. Sony claims that you can achieve a 50% charge in just 30 minutes using their 30W charger (available separately).
The Sony Xperia 5 V is set to grace stores in late September, with a starting price of €999.
